Captain Planet & Jesus

Anyone remember the old 90's cartoon Captain Planet? We would watch it in school, and I would love to get up early on a Saturday morning and watch it. The premise of the show was about Earth health and sustainment. Captain Planet was basically a superhero that did away with bad guys that hurt the environment and/or polluted the Earth. But, the one's that really helped Captain Planet with his overall goal was his team called the Planeteers. Their famous phrase, "By your powers combined, I am CAPTAIN PLANET". Then Captain Planet would show up in all his power and defeat the issue at hand. That's a rough synopsis, but you get the point.

One of my favorite parts of the Bible is when Paul talked about the body of Christ working together to support, uplift, and help each other in 1 Corinthians 12. 1 Corinthians 13 is the "love chapter" that everyone loves to recite and remember, but few quote 1 Corinthians 12. It's a chapter of support, a chapter of uplifting one another, a chapter of combining your powers.

This week we start a new series, "As It Is In Heaven", and we will discuss what it looks like to combine our powers. Because what happens when our powers combine Jesus can show up in all of His power and defeat the issues at hand. Matthew 6, Jesus is teaching the Jewish people how to pray and one of the first things He teaches them to pray is this, "...thy kingdom come, thy will be done... on EARTH as it is in HEAVEN." Essentially Jesus was teaching that the Kingdom of God is made evident when we decide to let our powers combine on Earth.

Think about it. What do you think would happen to poverty in your community if all followers of Jesus were obedient in the principle of tithing? Statistics say that only 2% of Jesus followers in the US actually give 10% as God asks. What would happen to the hatred and racism in your community if all the followers of Jesus treated people by their potential rather than their pre-assumed perceptions? What would happen to the divorce rate in America if men lead as God created us to and mothers chased God instead of public approval? By no means are these all encompassing or meant to be overarching for any genre, but the truth is simple: If our powers would combine, King Jesus could really take care of the issues we complain about.

You're carrying a power and purpose in you that's greater than anything that can happen around you. You can and will do amazingly powerful things. Imagine, though, what would happen if we combined our efforts toward the same goal. Back to the Planeteers for a moment; do you know why they combined their powers? Because it was for the same purpose.... to make the Earth cleaner and healthier. What if we combined our powers, purposes, promises to make the Earth cleaner and healthier spiritually? This is why we, at Radiate, have Life Groups and serving teams. We don't serve just to do it, but because God asked us to and because we can get in community with others. We join Life Groups because we do life together, no matter what!

I'd love to talk with you more about what it means to bring Heaven to Earth in such difficult and disastrous times this Sunday as we start our new series As It Is In Heaven. "I'm Pregnant" will discuss what our role is with Jesus, what our purpose is, and how we can combine our powers to see Jesus lifted high! I'll see you and your guests at 10 & 11:30!
